About the artist: 1947 Born London, UK 1961 Migrated to Melbourne 1973‑81 Kimberley Region, WA 1981‑82 Perth, WA 1982‑88 Rushworth, Victoria 1988‑ Lilydale, Victoria It wasn’t until I became a mature adult that my formal training in Art began, although my family had always encouraged an interest in the subject. I spent eight years living in the Kimberley region of WA with my husband and rapidly growing family (8 kids). Over this time I came to know the country so well, especially its people and its spirituality that it became an essential part of me. I have returned there many times since and always feel like I have come home. These links consistently seem to find expression in my paintings and drawings, whether it be the grandeur of the rugged, barren ranges or a few small rocks in a quiet stream. When I begin to paint or draw, regardless of the plans I may have, the works seem to develop a style of their own. They often develop a strange ambiguity reflecting the inhospitable landscape while simultaneously evoking a sensation of peacefulness and calm. The works in this exhibition combine my attachment to the outback with that of my home environment in the Yarra Valley. The use of charcoal, ink, collage and mixed media bring an immediacy to the work and appeals to my inclination to experiment with various materials.
