About the artist: When looking at Paul Casey's complex, realistically rendered paintings, the viewer experiences a strange sense of dislocation and a feeling that one knows, yet at the same time, can't know exactly what is happening in them. The paintings are peopled with characters who are both real and imagined; some are or once were real, like movie stars, but have come to exist in our collective memory and imagination. The viewer encounters these people in the midst of a specific scene and in the context of what appears to be a specific story. Yet, the facts of the events remain elusive and the ultimate interpretation is left to the observer/viewer. In the artists words: " A portrayal of characters remain, old, new, some recurring. Shifting closer to deeper shadows among stillness or motion. Fixed, related to the brain a continuing stare and spotlight prevail."
